How SlangCheck researches terms
Our process separates meaning evidence from popularity and regional trend judgements.
1. Identify the expression
We begin with the term, common spelling variations, abbreviations and aliases. Similar-looking expressions are kept separate when they have different meanings.
2. Compare meaning evidence
Definitions are checked against a mix of language references, community usage, reputable reporting and contextual examples. A single isolated post is not treated as enough evidence for a broad meaning.
3. Separate meanings by context
When an expression has several established uses, each meaning receives its own explanation, example and context keywords. Sentence search uses those keywords to choose the most likely interpretation.
4. Record regional differences
Global, Australian and United States trend records are stored separately. A term can be well known globally but uncommon in a particular country, or strongly regional while still appearing online elsewhere.
5. Assign confidence carefully
Confidence reflects the strength and consistency of the available evidence. It does not mean that every speaker uses the word in exactly the same way.
6. Review and update
Research dates and editorial status are stored with entries. Trends should be revisited because meme language and online usage can change much faster than traditional vocabulary.
